WHAT SHOULD WE DO ABOUT AFGHANISTAN'S OPIUM CROP?

By now almost everyone has red about Afghanistan cultivating 193,000 hectares of opium poppies. So our experts are trying to figure out what we can do to turn this horrible situation into a good situation for the free world. The most prevalent idea I have heard is that the United States or major pharmaceutical companies should buy the opium crop and use it to make legitimate medications. Sounds like a good idea. WRONG. According to Ambassador Thomas Schweich, licensing farmers to grow legalized opium puts Afghanistan in danger of becoming a narco-welfare state. Interesting. One of my favorite blogs Willisms has a good article on this issue.
