TRUCKS FROM MEXICO SET TO TRAVEL ON U.S. HIGHWAYS

When I first heard this story being discussed on a talk radio show, it sounded like the United States was going to turn any Mexican truck driver who wanted to come, loose on our highways. Well, it's not quite that bad. Under the 1994 NAFTA agreement broader access for ground shipments from Mexico and the United States was approved. The Clinton administration never bothered to comply with the provisions of NAFTA, but a special tribunal ordered the Bush administration to do so in 2001. Under the pilot program that will go into effect this weekend Mexican long haul trucking companies that have met safety, licensing, and other US requirements will be allowed to operate their rigs throughout the country. The United States will have the same rights in Mexico. It seems to me that this is a bad time to be starting a pilot program in this country that has anything to do with immigration.
