David Brooks is one of my favorite columnists. He has a terrific op-ed in The New York Times about the Hamiltonian Ground. Mr. Brooks points out that the Republican Presidential candidates seem to have forgotten the Hamilton principles that they should be following, instead of adhering to pandering to certain factions. I think they should all read this article.

I don't know how anyone else feels about Ron Paul's candidacy for President, but I view him as an annoying distraction. His strident shouting at each debate takes away from the focus that we all need to have on serious issues. Tom Bevan has a really good article about Dr. Paul's criticism of the use of the term "Islamic fascism."

John McCain has outlined his proposals for health care reform. From the sounds of it, he has ideas closer to what I believe we need than any other candidate that I have heard. The Senator's major idea would give an individual a refundable tax credit of $2500 and $5000 for families. The part of his plan that I really like is the idea that he would permit people to purchase policies across state lines. That would be so advantageous for the average consumer.

According to Robert Novak, this week reform-minded conservative Republicans will introduce the most sweeping tax plan since Jack Kemp's three decades ago. Their idea would establish a radically simplified, flatter tax for an estimated 90 percent to 95 percent of all income tax filers.

This is the same liberal Judge who has already blocked the Social Security Administration from sending out 140,000 letters to employers with 8 million employees whose names did not match their numbers.

Good story about Bill Frist talking about global health as a currency for peace around the world. According to Dr. Frist
"Medicine is built on trust. Medicine is built on humanity. Medicine is built on tolerance. I am absolutely convince the more we can do with health around the world, the more we can do for peace around the world. You don't go to war with somebody who has just saved the life of your child."

Dr. Bill Frist has a blog on his Volpac web site (www.volpac.org) discussing the issue of health reform. Dr. Frist views health care as the number one domestic issue facing this country. He talks about developing a plan based on conservative principles of individual responsiblity, dignity, and compassion. He also talks about how important it is to the Republican party that we not be cast as "anti-child."

It appears from the top Republican pollsters that the swing voters, especially the suburban "security moms" still hold Republicans in very low regard. And even worse, they don't much like what the Republicans are saying about taxes. Stephen Moore, in the op-ed written for the Wall Street Journal doesn't agree with that. He believes that the GOP message on taxes needs a makeover - maybe even a radical one. According to Mr. Moore, most voters are unpersuaded by the Republican message that the Bush tax cuts were a resounding success that pumped the economy back to life. Two silver linings for the GOP: when politicians say they are only going to soak the rich, most people fear their own tax bills will go up. The other silver lining- The Democrat's tax happy policies are an even less palatable message to voters.

It is always fascinating to me that when there is a fight in Congress, it's the lobbyists and special interest groups who line up with the Congressional leaders and it's ultimately up to the American people to stop the shenanigans. Looks like we are in for another battle over medicare. Wonder who is looking out for us.

I was saddened to hear that Senator Domenici is retiring because of a progressive brain disease. According to the report in the New York Times Senator Domenici suffers from a frontotemporal lobar degeneration disease, sometimes called Pick's disease. Having lost a friend to what was first thought to be Pick's disease, I am somewhat suspicious whether this is what the Senator actually suffers from. In any event, I wish him well. He has always been one of my favorite Senators.
