SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE

Congressman John Murtha remains the king of pork, bringing over 150 million dollars to his Congressional District in Pennsylvania.

FBI - WRONG AGAIN

A Federal Appeals Court has ruled that the FBI went too far in their search of Congressman William Jefferson's office. I would hope that our top law enforcement agency would get it right the first time around in a case of this importance.

SEVENTEEN KIDS AND HOPING FOR MORE

An Arkansas couple, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar became the parents of their seventeenth child this week. The kids range in age from 19 to 2 and Mr. Duggar said they would love to have more. I don't know about you but 17 seems like an awful lot, and I like kids.

SOUTHWICK NOMINATION GOES TO THE FULL SENATE

Democrat Senator Diane Feinstein exhibited something rarely seen in Washington these days, courage - and voted with 9 Republican Senators to send the nomination of Leslie Southwick to the full Senate for a vote. Good for Senator Feinstein.

Bridge over Troubled Waters

Bridge collapses in Minneapolis killing at least 7. That is a scary thought to be driving down a main multi-lane road and end up in the Mississippi River.

Politics at High Level

Congress plays politics at the Attorney General level. Is it too much to ask the Congress to just legislate and not play politics with high ranking officials?

BE VERY CAREFUL MITCH MCCONNELL!!

Trent Lott has never been one of my favorite politicians. This story in The Hill just makes me think that Mitch McConnell had better be very careful with this guy.

DID YOU EVER WONDER WHO RUNS THE ZOO?

Well, this story makes it pretty clear that the monkeys do run the zoo. Wonder if it's like this in DC?

FRED THOMPSON AND THE RUN FOR THE WHITE HOUSE

Ten Minute Misconduct has an excellent post on Fred Thompson and his run for the White House. Check it out.

HUGH HEWITT AND JOHN BURNS

Make sure you read Hugh Hewitt's interview with New York Times Pulitzer Prize winner John Burns on how the surge is working.

UPDATE ON CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS

Chief Justice John Roberts received a telephone call from President Bush, and assured the President that he was fine.

PATRICK RUFFINI ON THE GOP AND THE NEW MEDIA STAFF

Patrick Ruffini has an important article today about the spending trends for in house staff of the Democrat and Republicans. It is a disturbing analysis, and one that we all need to look at. According to Patrick about 36% of the Democrats' Web budgets are dedicated to staff, while less than 8% of the Republican Budgets are. Read the entire article at Patrick Ruffini's site.

CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS SUFFERS A SEIZURE

Chief Justice Roberts evidently suffered a seizure, which caused him to fall approximately five to ten feet onto a dock. He was said to be alert and aware, but will remain in the hospital overnight. The Chief Justice had suffered a similar seizure about 13 years ago.

MORE BAD NEWS FOR REPUBLICANS

Politico is reporting that the IRS and FBI are raiding Senator Ted Stevens' Alaska home. This is not good news, but again, I remind everyone of the presumption of innocence that forms the core of our legal system.

BILL FRIST FOR GOVERNOR?

Interesting blog in the Tennessean asking the question. Senator Frist has been busy fundraising for Republican state lawmakers. The election isn't until 2010, so hopefully that will be enough time to convince him.

HOW HONEST WOULD YOU HAVE BEEN?

An ATM machine at a truck stop in Louisiana gave out $20 bills instead of $5's. How honest would you have been? Hopefully almost everyone did the right thing and turned the extra money in. Especially in view of the fact that the ATM machine keeps records of when the money was taken and by whom.

WORLD'S WORST POET

Check out the great article at Ten Minute Misconduct about fans honoring the world's worst poet.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!

Former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney is suing the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for libel. Someone needs to have a talk with her.

THE REPUBLICANS HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO

A recent article in the Politico shows how far behind the Republican party really is. According to the article, in the first six months of this year, The Dems federal candidates and the party's three national committees raised $381 million, compared to the Republican's $291 million. And the statistics only get worse. The Republican Party has a lot of work to do if they hope to close the gap by 2008.

IS IT OVER BEFORE IT BEGINS?

The Politico has a story by Mike Allen that suggests that Fred Thompson's campaign may be over before it begins. I would simply say, not so fast, everyone. The gist of the story is that Thompson will report around 3 Million dollars in fundraising, far short of what the experts expected. But keep in mind that the period in question is only from June 4 to June 30, not a very long period of time at all. Plus, he still hasn't officially announced. I agree that he needs to move pretty soon, but it's way too early to count him out.

MICHAEL VICK - THE BEGINNING OF THE END?

Well, now that Michael Vick's supposed best friend has entered a guilty plea, it seems pretty clear that this is the beginning of the end for Vick. I still cling to my belief that he is innocent until proven guilty, but you can be sure the prosecutors already know that he is going to give up Vick big time.

PORKERS OF THE MONTH

Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has named Max Baucus and Gordon Smith as the Porkers of the month. Check out the article. CAGW sees the SCHIP legislation that they are pushing as the first step in creating government controlled universal healthcare.

CONGRESS AND ETHICS REFORM

So, Congress is going to take up ethics reform this week. I still think it's kind of like turning the fox loose in the chicken house. Once again, Reid is going to try and ram through a massive bill that most Senators won't even take the time to read. At least that is what Jim DeMint says.

DOES THIS GUY HAVE ANY CREDIBILITY LEFT?

I don't know how you feel, but every time I read another story about or by Jose Canseco, I'm skeptical about the subject matter. Now he is saying that he had "other stuff on Alex Rodriguez that will be coming out in his new book". MSNBC says there is no suggestion that ARod used steroids. We'll see what Jose has come up with now. By the way, visit Ten Minute Misconduct and take the poll there about steroid use.

STRANGE STORY ABOUT DEAD BIRDS IN DC

ABC News is reporting that a Hazmat scare has closed two DC Metro Stations. According to initial reports, several dead birds were found after a man supposedly sprayed a substance that authorities think was a commercial rat poison.

DO THE SPOUSES MATTER IN POLITICS?

It never fails to amaze me when I see a professional woman treating other women like they don't count. Susan Estrich has an article about the race for first spouse. Her comment that this is the first time that the spouses have played such an important role in the campaigns makes it obvious that her memory isn't very good.

MIKE TOMLIN - A DIFFERENT KIND OF COACH

Mike Tomlin has yet to coach his first professional football game, but he is making it clear that he will not be the kind of NFL coach Steeler fans have been used to since 1969, during the eras of Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher.

THE DANGER OF LEAVING IRAQ NOW

The Democrats have been pushing for a withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Whether they favor a phased withdrawal or an immediate withdrawal, most Democrat politicians have made it clear that they want our troops out. The Washington Times has a good article about the danger of withdrawing too soon.
