A two year old girl from Inda underwent surgery on Tuesday. The little girl was born with four arms and four legs. Doctors are hopeful that the surgery will leave the girl with a normal body. I sure hope so.

Michelle Malkin has an excellent article in Townhall.com about the SCHIP bill. In view of the House vote today, sustaining the President's veto of the bill, this is an especially important column to read.

The labor unions in California are protesting Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposal about health care. According to the labor unions the Governor's proposal would gouge the middle class. The Governor's plan would require individuals to purchase health care insurance, with the state providing subsidies for the poor. Under the plan, individuals earning more than $35,735 and families of four making more than $72,275 would not receive subsidies.

Bill Frist blogs on Volpac (www.volpac.org) about using medicine as a currency for peace. As always Dr. Frist makes a lot of sense. He quotes the 9/11 Commission Report: "When people lose hope, when societies break down, when countries fragment, the breeding grounds for terrorism are created." Dr. Frist goes onto say "We simply cannot afford to stand pat - not when we know medicine can help bring stability ...can serve as that currency for peace."

John McCain has outlined his proposals for health care reform. From the sounds of it, he has ideas closer to what I believe we need than any other candidate that I have heard. The Senator's major idea would give an individual a refundable tax credit of $2500 and $5000 for families. The part of his plan that I really like is the idea that he would permit people to purchase policies across state lines. That would be so advantageous for the average consumer.

It is always fascinating to me that when there is a fight in Congress, it's the lobbyists and special interest groups who line up with the Congressional leaders and it's ultimately up to the American people to stop the shenanigans. Looks like we are in for another battle over medicare. Wonder who is looking out for us.

John Stossel, who I usually find puzzling, has an article talking about health care in this country. His argument is that Hillary's plan is a move in the wrong direction. He claims that the problem in America is that 250 million Americans have health insurance, and that no one wants to pay for his own medical care. Stossel seems to be saying that we should have less insurance coverage. I don't know if I agree with that. I think a consumer driven health insurance system is the answer.

Senator/Doctor/Professor Bill Frist blogs at Volpac about the class he is teaching at his alma mater, Princeton University. The title of the blog is "Working to develop new thoughts on healthcare reform." Frist is "the Schultz Class of 1951 Professor of International Economic Policy at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs." A pretty hefty title for teaching a graduate class about healthcare in the global economy. Professor Frist will be teaching this class with his colleague, Uwe Reinhardt. As always Bill Frist continues to earn my respect for his continued devotion to the American people, from teaching at Princeton, to working for OneVote.org, to his work for Save the Children. A remarkable example of ways to serve mankind.

Karl Rove has an excellent op-ed in the Wall Street Journal about health care and why he believes the Republicans can win on the issue of health care. Rove recommends a series of reforms that he argues will make health care more affordable for all Americans without resorting to universal health care.

Organized labor is launching a new push for national health care. The Cato Institute says their actions will end up hurting workers in the long run. Why? Because they want to bypass union-employer bargaining disputes. Now you ask, how would that hurt union workers. Well, the Cato Institute says in the long run, Union workers would end up paying higher taxes for health care, and they would not have access to health care they have today. Thanks to River West for this article.

John Edwards said on Sunday that his universal health care proposal would include mandatory preventive care. According to Edwards, people would be required to go to the doctor for checkups and preventive tests such as mammograms. I don't know about the rest of you but I have enough sense to go for preventive tests such as mammograms, colonoscopies and other tests. I sure don't need the federal government making it mandatory that I do so. This just smacks of big brother.

The National Review had an interesting editorial the other day entitled "Calling Doctor Rudy". They argue that although Mitt Romney's health care proposal and Rudy's are both superior to anything the Democrats have offered, they think Giuliani's is superior to Romney's. It's an editorial well worth reading.
