RUDY GIULIANI AND HEALTH CARE

The National Review had an interesting editorial the other day entitled "Calling Doctor Rudy". They argue that although Mitt Romney's health care proposal and Rudy's are both superior to anything the Democrats have offered, they think Giuliani's is superior to Romney's. It's an editorial well worth reading.

HILLARY AND MR. HSU

Funny how we really haven't heard a lot about this little fundraising mishap. It seems Hillary took thousands of dollars from Norman Hsu, who just happens to have an outstanding felony arrest warrant in California. Mr. Hsu failed to appear in court for sentencing in a fraud scheme more than 15 years ago.

JOHN HAWKINS SAYS IT IS TIME TO GET OVER KATRINA

John Hawkins, writing for Townhall says it is time to get over Katrina. He argues that people lose their homes in this country every day of the year, in various natural and man made disasters, yet no one sits around and worries about someone who lost their home two years ago. Mr. Hawkins also argues that nobody is owed a living for the rest of his life because he had a bad break two years ago. What do you think? Is John Hawkins right? Is it time for the people of New Orleans to get over it and move on?

GOT ARACHNOPHOBIA? CHECK THIS OUT!!

The New York Times has a really scary story about a vast spider web crawling with million of spiders that is spreading across several acres of a North Texas park. As a person who is terrified of spiders, this is surely a place that I never want to visit.

TEN MINUTE MISCONDUCT AND CHUPACABRA

Ten Minute Misconduct has a cool story about a possible Chupacabra being found in Texas. Don't ask me what the heck it is. I read the story and still don't know, but the people in Texas and Pete do. Check it out.

TRUCKS FROM MEXICO SET TO TRAVEL ON U.S. HIGHWAYS

When I first heard this story being discussed on a talk radio show, it sounded like the United States was going to turn any Mexican truck driver who wanted to come, loose on our highways. Well, it's not quite that bad. Under the 1994 NAFTA agreement broader access for ground shipments from Mexico and the United States was approved. The Clinton administration never bothered to comply with the provisions of NAFTA, but a special tribunal ordered the Bush administration to do so in 2001. Under the pilot program that will go into effect this weekend Mexican long haul trucking companies that have met safety, licensing, and other US requirements will be allowed to operate their rigs throughout the country. The United States will have the same rights in Mexico. It seems to me that this is a bad time to be starting a pilot program in this country that has anything to do with immigration.

IS THE GOP IN TROUBLE IN 2008?

Jonathan Weisman and Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post, two liberal journalists, have an article in today's Post that unfortunately spells out the problems facing the Senate GOP. The article points out that there are 22 seats to defend, very little campaign cash, and now two open seats, in Virginia and Colorado. Also up in the air is the seat in Nebraska, because Chuck Hagel hasn't announced whether he will retire or not. The only Democratic targets for the Republicans are the seats of Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Tim Johnson of South Dakota. It seems unlikely that Republicans will lose enough seats to give the Democrats the 60 Senators they need to have a veto proof majority, but they will probably lose a few more seats.

HOW TYPICAL OF THE DEMOCRATS - ANOTHER BOYCOTT

Now comes the information that John Edwards, Barack Obama, Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd, and Joe Biden have pledged to boycott states that break party rules by holding early primaries. I think the Florida Democratic Party chairwoman, Karen Thurman said it best "A pact to ignore tens of millions of diverse Americans by a selfish, four-state alliance of party insiders." Notice that so far Hillary Clinton hasn't signed the pledge.

IS THERE A FRONTRUNNER FOR THE GOP NOMINATION?

The Associated Press has an interesting article about the GOP race for President. The AP points out that the entry into the race on September 6 will reconfigure the race. They also offer an excellent analysis of the key primary states.

IS FRED PLANNING TO CRASH THE PARTY?

The New York Times is reporting that Senator Fred Thompson is planning to air a 30 second advertisement that will be carried by FOX just as viewers are tuning in to watch the debate on September 5, 2007. It should be very interesting.

BOOKS ABOUT WITCHES OK - BIBLE IS NOT

Culbertson Elementary School in Pennsylvania decided that it was ok for kindergarten students to invite their parents to read books about witches, but not ok to invite their parents to read the Bible. It seems a kindergarten class was given an assignment in which parents were invited to read their child's favorite book. One child was denied permission to have his Mother read a Bible story. The United States District Court sided with the school's decision. The Arizona-based Alliance Defense Fund has submitted amicus briefs in the pending legal action. It will be interesting to see the final outcome in this matter. My thanks to River West for this article.

SENATOR LARRY CRAIG RESIGNS

Just a few minutes ago, Senator Larry Craig resigned as Idaho's Senator. Senator Craig apologized to his family, the people of Idaho and his Senate colleagues. He made no admission of guilt, but did say that he intends to fight the charges and can't do so as a Senator. It is a sad day for all Republicans, but the right thing for Senator Craig to do.

BILL FRIST: TAKING HEALTH DIPLOMACY AND ONE VOTE 08 TO SOUTH CAROLINA

Dr. Bill Frist keeps one of the busiest schedules that a human being can keep. The thing that amazes me is that he never seems to get tired. He just returned this week from Bangladesh, working with Save the Children and Thursday he spent the day in South Carolina working with One Vote 08. He is an incredible humanitarian.

FRED THOMPSON PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT

Ed Morrissey has the transcript of Fred Thompson's press conference from the Minnesota State Fair on Monday, August 27, 2007. Ed also has some thoughts about Fred getting into the race.

REID NOW WILLING TO DEAL

The Washington Post first reported it, but Ed Morrissey at Captains Quarter really calls it right: "Harry Getting Desperate" As Captain Ed reports Reid now realizes that the coming weeks will be one of the last opportunities to alter the course of the war. Could it be because Petraeus is going to report good news when he gives his report to Congress? Anyhow, Harry Reid is now admitting that his stance this summer, when he ruled out any compromise with Republicans didn't work. So now, Harry wants to reach out to Republicans and invite them to join the Democrats. Will it work this time? Hopefully not.

ZOGBY: MOST AMERICANS BELIEVE IRAQ WAR NOT LOST - WHERE IS THE PRESS?

There is a new Zogby poll out. According to Zogby, 54 percent of Americans believe Iraq is not a lost cause. Wonder where the media is on this one. Funny the New York Times hasn't reported this poll. Have you seen it anywhere?

MEDIA RESEARCH CENTER: NETWORKS BIASED IN FAVOR OF DEMOCRATS

Brent Bozell, President of the Media Research Center appeared last night on Hannity & Colmes. He talked about the study done by MRC showing that from January through July, the three major networks morning shows devoted nearly twice the time to stories about, and interviews with Democratic over Republican presidential candidates.

MIKE HUCKABEE - COMING ON STRONG

Mike Huckabee appears to be gaining support in Iowa and across the Country. He has been calling himself the "real conservative" and after his second place finish in Iowa, he appears to be moving up in the polls. Of course, Fred Thompson hasn't officially gotten in the race. It will be interesting to see where Huckabee stands in October and November.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN JUDGES FORGET THEIR JOBS

Big Lizards has another terrific article, this one about what one lowly county judge in Iowa did to the Iowa state legislature. Judge Robert Hanson overturned a nine-year old Iowa law and went against the opinion of a majority of Iowans and said that same sex marriage is permissible in Iowa, basically because he feels compassion for gays who cannot wed. Seems to me the Judge's job in this case was merely to determine whether the law that has been in existence in Iowa for nine years is valid. Nothing else. This is what happens when we get activist judges. They forget what their job is.

WWE TAKES ACTION - TOO LITTLE TOO LATE?

Well, the WWE (for those of you who are uninitiated, WWE stands for World Wrestling Entertainment) has finally taken action against some of its wrestlers who have evidently failed drug tests for steroids. It seems to me that they are about 50 wrestler deaths too late.
