PUTTING A PLAGUE IN PERSPECTIVE

This is an interesting article, but Mr. Halperin has no credibility. The only person whose opinion I would rely on when it comes to global health is that of Dr. Bill Frist. He has been fighting this battle for 32 years, and has the knowledge, expertise, and experience to cause me to give his ideas great weight.

US DIPLOMAT KILLED IN SUDAN SHOOTING

Nice way to start the New Year. I wonder if it had anything to do with the President signing the Sudan sanctions bill?

BUSH SIGNS INTO LAW SUDAN DIVESTMENT MEASURE

This is a good move by President Bush. Something like this will hurt the government of Sudan more than anything else we could do.

SOMALIA GANG DEMANDS RANSOM FOR AID WORKERS

I sometimes wonder if this part of the world will ever have peace.

7 EUROPEANS FREED IN CHAD KIDNAP CASE

French President Nicolas Sarkozy made a trip to Chad and met with Chad's leader Idriss Deby to discuss the situation involving French Nationals being held by Chad on kidnapping charges. Sarkozy left Chad with 7 of the Europeans held, including 3 French journalists and four flight attendants from Spain.

US SEEKS TO REMOVE PIRATES FROM SHIPS

Wow!!! Every time I read a story about Pirates, I just shake my head in amazement. Earlier this week, Pirates took over a North Korean tanker off the coast of Africa. The United States Navy went to the aid of the North Korean tanker, and ultimately ended up boarding the tanker to treat the wounded on the ship. Now the Navy is keeping its eye on a Japanese tanker that has been taken over by pirates off the coast of Somalia. Our Navy is incredible, but I bet the men and women in the Navy never thought they would end up battling pirates. Great story.

MOST OF CHAD CASE CHILDREN HAD FAMILIES: U.N. REPORT

This story is looking worse and worse for the nine French nationals and seven Spaniards under arrest in Chad for attempting to illegally remove 21 girls and 82 boys aged 1 to 10 from their native land. According to the UN 91 of the children mentioned a family environment. I'm not sure what that means, but if it turns out these kids had family willing to take care of them, it seems pretty clear that the French and Spaniards could face some pretty serious charges, and deservedly so.

IN AFRICA, A PAPERCRAFT PATH OUT OF POVERTY

The Christian Science Monitor has a good article about the efforts of BeadForLife, a small Colorado-based nonprofit group and their efforts to help African women. This is an inspiring story of how the people of Africa can be helped, and how they are helping themselves.

CHAD CHARGES 6 FRENCH WITH KIDNAPPING

Chad has charged six French nationals with kidnapping after they attempted to fly from Chad with 103 children, who were allegedly orphans from Sudan's Darfur region. I have a feeling that we are going to hear a lot more about this story.

DARFUR PEACE TALKS OPEN TO GRIM START

Negotiatiors are lowering expectations even before the start of the Darfur peace talks. There were almost no key rebel leaders present to negotiate an agreement with the sudanese government. Without the key rebel leaders, there is little hope for a quick peace agreement.

SUDANESE OIL FIELD ATTACK THREATENS PEACE TALKS

A Darfur rebel group accuses foreign oil companies of sponsoring violence and tries to force them out of Sudan. Why doesn't this surprise me. The Justice and Equality Movement, an Islamist rebel group in Darfur, wants to drive out foreign oil companies, which they claim are funding government violence in Darfur.

AFRICA'S NEW $5 MILLION PRIZE FOR TOP LEADERS

This is a really different concept. A wealthy African has created a $5 million annual prize to reward good leaders in Africa. The first winner is Joachim Chissano, the former president of Mozambique. I have a real problem with rewarding any leader for doing what they should do for their country. I'm sure they all take some sort of oath of office swearing to uphold the laws of their country. How can we reward them for doing what they are required to do?

DARFUR REBEL WARNS OF TALKS CHAOS

At least 200,000 people have died and some 2 million people have been forced from their homes during the four year conflict in Darfur. With all this killing going on, a rebel leader now is threatening to boycott upcoming peace talks if more than two rebel groups are invited. Won't these people ever learn?

US TARGETS ETHIOPIA FOR SANCTIONS

The House of Representatives has passed a bill thretening to impose sanctions on Ethiopian officials and stop military aid unless democratic reforms are made. Did the House forget that Ethiopia is our strongest ally in the African region in the war on terror?

JIMMY CARTER - NO GENOCIDE IN DARFUR

As I said earlier, I believe Jimmy Carter to be one of the worst Presidents our country has ever had. Earlier today, I gave him credit for standing up to the dictators in the Sudan. Well, I spoke too soon. Now he claims that there is no genocide in Darfur. Mr. Carter, you need to leave the Sudan. You are not helping the people of Darfur with those kind of comments.

U.S. STEPS UP ITS MILITARY PRESENCE IN AFRICA

This week, Africom becomes officially operational under the command of General William Ward. It should be interesting to see what our military intends to do in Africa.
